Peabody Energy Corp. says it is closing a coal mine in east-central Illinois mine because geologic conditions make it impractical to continue operating.
The mine’s 160 employees were notified of the decision on Thursday, spokeswoman Beth Sutton said. They will spend the next two months closing the mine, located near Danville.
St. Louis-based Peabody said all of the employees will be offered positions at the company’s other mining operations, including 13 in the Illinois Basin, a coal-producing region that includes parts of Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky payday advance.
Vermilion Grove began production in 2001, according to Peabody’s website. It produced 1 million tons of coal in 2008, making it one of the company’s smaller mines in the region.
