Pakistani judge shuts Facebook for Draw Mohammed page

Written on May 20, 2010

The Pakistani government has lifted a ban on YouTube after the company took down "blasphemous" footage, but a temporary ban on Facebook imposed earlier this week remains, the Wall Street Journal is reporting.

A Lahore court ruled on Wednesday that authorities should shut down Facebook until May 31 because the site was hosting a Facebook page called "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day!," which its creator said was intended to combat threats of violence against people because of depictions of the Islamic prophet. Depictions of Mohammed are sacrilegious to some muslims.

Facebook told the Associated Press that the content didn't violate its terms of service, but added it understood it may not be legal in some countries.

YouTube was allowed to resume unfettered operations after taking some objectionable material off its site, according to Pakistani officials, the Journal reported.
