Ontario, Sask. lead unemployment claims

OTTAWA – About 462,760 Canadians received regular Employment Insurance benefits in March, 9,870 more than in February.
The number receiving regular benefits rose in eight provinces, with the largest advances in Saskatchewan (up 6.7 per cent) and Ontario (3.8), as benefit payments totalled $783.2 million.
The number receiving regular benefits declined 4.3 per cent from a year earlier.
Provincially, the largest year-over-year percentage declines in regular beneficiaries were in Saskatchewan (down 13.1 per cent) and Quebec (down 6.6) instant payday loan.
The number of regular beneficiaries has declined in most cities since last year, most notably in Saskatoon, where the number of regular EI beneficiaries had fallen 34 per cent.
The number of regular beneficiaries rose in a handful of cities, including in Oshawa, Ont., where the number rose 56 per cent.
The number of Canadians receiving regular benefits declined for both men (down 4.7 per cent) and women (down 5.3) compared with March 2007.
