Hawaii March bankruptcy filings soar 32%

March bankruptcy filings soared 32 percent over the previous year as the economy continued to take its toll on Hawaii residents and businesses.

There were 357 bankruptcy filings last month, up from 270 in March 2009, according to statistics from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

Bankruptcy cases have jumped since the beginning of the year as more businesses close and residents face pay cuts and layoffs.

Filings jumped 29 percent to 291 in February, up from 226 the year before, while January filings spiked 33 percent to 276 from 208 the previous year.

March filings by county:

• City and County of Honolulu filings rose 21 percent year-over-year to 206.

• Hawaii County filings soared 87 percent to 56.

• Maui County filings jumped 74 percent to 73.

• Kauai County filings fell 21 percent to 22.
